Project Work------ Scenario 7
Problem faced:
Janice is a transferred student to Guang Yang Secondary school. Initially, she feels that her classmates are giving her a cold shoulder as all her classmates have form their own cliques. Over time however, a group of older girls in the school invited her to join them. Janice feels a sense of belonging to the group and is very happy. Over time, they began to pressurize her to smoke and to treat her like an outcast when she declines. Janice is now at a crossroad as she wants to be their friend yet be a non-smoker.
What we know :
2. She feels that her classmates are avoiding her.
3. She feels a sense of belonging when she is with the group of older girls.
4. She wants to be friends with the older girls yet being a non-smoker.

What we need to know :
1. We need to know why her friends are avoiding and ignoring
her
2. We need to know why she still wants to hang out with the
older girls even though they are smokers and she wants to
be a non-smoker.
Learning issues :
1. She needs to mix around with her classmates so that they
can understand her more.
2. She can persuade the older girls to stop smoking so that
their health will not be at stake and she can hang out with
them more often.
Disadvantages of smoking :
1. Tobacco smoke contains nicotine which can result to addiction.
2. It destroys both health and money at the same time.
3. Smoking will result in yellow teeth, smelly hair and clothes.
4. Smoking will result in stinky fingers and dulled complexion.
5. Smoking can result to cancer.
6. Stamina will be affected
Advantages of not smoking :
1. You will live longer and better.
2. By quitting smoking you will lower chances of having a heart attack, stroke or
cancer.
3. You will have extra money to spend on other things.
4. The people you live around with will be healthier.
5. If you are pregnant, chances are you will have a healthier baby.

How to quit smoking :
1. Discard all cigarettes and ashtrays from home
and any other places.
2. Do not let other smokers influence you
3. Confide in your family, friends that you want to
quit smoking and you want their support, tell
them not to allow you to even take a single puff.
4. Do not let other people smoke in your home.
5. Try to distract yourself from urges of smoking,
talk to someone or take a walk.
6. Do things to reduce stress
7. Drink a lot of water and fluids.
8. Plan something enjoyable to do everyday.
9. Talk to your health care provider like psycologist,
counsellors, doctors, dentist.
The Strategies that Janice can use is to persuade the older girls to stop smoking by explaining to them the disadvantages and the effects smoking can create and how to quit smoking. Try to persuade them into taking medication that will help reduce the urge to smoke.
The Pros of strategy is that the older girls might listen to Janice and stop smoking. In addition, they can save extra money to purchase other more important things, or for their futures.
The Cons of strategy is that the older girls might not listen to her and continue smoking. They also might kick her out of their group and ignore her.
The Possible Outcome is that they might allow her to join their group and be non-smokers. They might disapprove her to join their group and she will be left with no other choice but to make friends with her classmates.
Janice knew about all the disavantages of smoking and thus made her mind not to pick up the horrible habit. She confronted the group of older girls with the company of a few trusted friends from her primary school, she told them that if they want to force her to smoke, they are not her friends as they force her to do things that she did not want to do. Feeling bad about unable to change the concept of the older girls, Janice persisted to help them as she knew the consequences of smoking at such a young age even though they do not treat her as a friend.
She searched for articles concerning smoking and emailed it to them. She even extracted real life stories about a life of a daily smoker. She knew that those older girls cared alot about their appearences and picked up smoking also partially because of the 'cool' image it projects so she told them about the side effects of smoking like yellow nails, bad breathe, dulled complexions, smelly hair and clothes. The older girls gave a thought of giving up smoking.
ALTERNATIVE

She should also find out the reason/s of her being ignored by her classmates and try to change if the reason/s are acceptable. (eg. the way she presents herself.)By then, if the situation does not get any better, she should try to approach the school couseller or her trusted teachers.
